Vineyards

Our roots are deep in the land of Hawke’s Bay. Our vines thrive in diverse soils, from the renowned Gimblett Gravels to the cool inland slopes of the Ngaruroro River. The Crossroads Winery “home vineyard”, with a deep layer of ancient river silt, delivers wonderful aromatic qualities and the Gimblett Gravels provide depth, structure and intensity.

Hawke’s Bay is the perfect place to grow grapes for winemaking. Sunny, warm and dry, it has a myriad of soil profiles created by meandering rivers, massive earthquakes, high mountains and the Pacific Ocean, that laps its shores.

The grapes that are our life-blood are the result of enormous attention to detail. Each vine, planted on phylloxera-resistant rootstock, is nurtured to produce a strictly controlled number of bunches, ensuring wonderful concentration by balancing the demands placed on the vine perfectly with the soil vigour and water supply.

We are totally committed to sustainability. Sounds good doesn’t it? Here are just some of the real actions we’ve taken to reduce our impact on the land:

  • We reduced our tractor use by selecting slow growing grasses for planting in our rows.
  • We slashed weed spraying by running sheep in our vineyards. They’re also very good at nutrient recycling…
  • We ensure that, when we do use tractors, we multi-task (not so easy for blokes apparently), making sure that if we’re trimming leaves, we’re also mowing the grass
  • We signed up to Sustainable Winegrowing New Zealand® and manage every vine by their stringent system of environmental best-practice
